NOT YOUR GRANDMA'S ROSE: 6 Modern Florals That Bite Back
Floral perfumes have a branding problem. We associate them with powder puffs, old lace, and innocence.
But in modern architecture, flowers are used for contrast. They are placed against concrete, steel, and dark wood.
Scent Lab 33's new "Structural Floral" collection deconstructs the flower. We kept the petals but added the thorns, the dirt, and the roots. Here are 6 scents for people who think they hate florals.
1. THE STRUCTURE: SPIKES & WOOD
The Design: This is a rose with teeth. It opens with a blast of dry Black Pepper and Cumin, then settles into a woody Cedar base. It is not sweet; it is savory, spicy, and incredibly sexy.
The icon of woody roses.
Le Labo can sometimes smell a bit too much like body odor (cumin). We dialed back the cumin and amped up the clean Cedarwood.
2. THE STRUCTURE: DARK VELVET
The Design: Heavy, draped velvet. This pairs the darkest, most resinous Oud wood with a jammy, dark red Rose. It is gothic, mysterious, and fills the entire room.
Beautiful but fades fast.
Oud needs to be heavy. Our version is an EDP/Extrait hybrid, ensuring that dark woody base lasts for 10+ hours.
3. THE STRUCTURE: RAW CHLOROPHYLL
The Design: Forget the flower; this is the smell of the florist shop floor. It smells of cut stems, wet leaves, and raw sap. It is bitter, crunchy, and vibrantly alive.
The classic "green" scent.
Diptyque relies heavily on sour Blackcurrant. We focused more on the "Galbanum" (Green Leaf) note, making it smell more like a living plant and less like fruit.
4. THE STRUCTURE: COLD GLASS
The Design: A white lily frozen in a block of ice. It removes the heavy "pollen" smell of traditional lilies and replaces it with Ozonic, watery notes. It is clean, sharp, and architectural.
A masterpiece of salty florals.
We used a "Mist" accord to make the scent feel weightless. It’s perfect for people who usually get headaches from white florals.
5. THE STRUCTURE: VINTAGE DUST
The Design: The scent of a 1920s vanity table. Dry face powder, lipstick wax, and candied violets. It is nostalgic, dry, and incredibly chic.
The violet bomb.
Modern tastes prefer less sugar. We reduced the candy sweetness and increased the dry "Iris Root" note, making it feel more like niche perfumery and less like candy.
6. THE STRUCTURE: SUNLIT ZEST
The Design: A rose garden next to a lemon grove. The acidity of the Bergamot cuts through the sweetness of the Rose, creating a fizzy, sparkling effect like pink champagne.
A lovely fresh rose.
We added a sharper Italian Bergamot top note. It gives the scent an energetic "morning" vibe that wakes you up.
Isabella's Design Note
Don't be afraid of flowers. When constructed with the right materials—wood, pepper, ice, and green leaves—they become the most powerful accessory in your wardrobe.
