The Chemistry of Vice: Why We Are Addicted to Smoke, Ink, and Liquor
Humans are strange creatures. Biologically, we should be attracted to the scent of fruit (food) and flowers (safety).
Yet, in 2025, the most trending notes in niche perfumery were what we call "The Vices": Alcohol, Smoke, and Darkness. Why?
Because these scents trigger the brain's reward system. They smell dangerous, indulgent, and sophisticated. Today, I am breaking down the chemistry of our "Vice Collection" (inspired by Kilian and Lalique).
1. The Intoxicants (Liquor & Spirits)
Recreating the smell of alcohol without the "ethanol sting" is complex chemistry.
- The Rum: Ethereal Rum. Inspired by Straight to Heaven. We use a Dried Fruit Accord mixed with Patchouli to mimic the "oak barrel" smell of aged dark rum. It is warm, woody, and spicy.
- The Vodka: Vodka Ginger Splash. Inspired by Blue Moon. This is a "Cold Distillate." We use Ginger CO2 extract and Calone to create that icy, metallic bite of vodka on the rocks.
2. The Smoke Signals (Hookah & Herbs)
Smoke is primal. It signals fire, heat, and transformation.
- The Apple Hookah: Embers Apple. Inspired by Smoking Hot. This is a technical marvel. We blend a "Burnt Sugar" molecule with Cinnamon and Apple to recreate the exact scent of sweet shisha smoke. It is addictive gourmand chemistry.
- The Psychotropic: Herbal Haze. Inspired by Smoke for the Soul. A controversial scent. It uses Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, and Mate Tea to mimic the green, bitter, and hazy aroma of... forbidden herbs.
3. The Dark Matter (Ink & Wood)
Some scents absorb light. These are for the introverts and the thinkers.
- The Blackest Black: Black Ink. Inspired by Encre Noire. This scent is 80% Vetiver Acetate and Iso E Super. It smells like wet earth, cypress wood, and cold ink. We smoothed out the "harsh" opening of the original to make it more wearable.
- The Holy Wood: Temple Santal. Inspired by Sacred Wood. A recreation of the endangered Mysore Sandalwood. It is milky, creamy, and spiritual.
4. The Narcotic Florals (Seduction)
When flowers become too heavy, they become "Narcotic." They smell intoxicating.
- The Invitation: Midnight Invitation. Inspired by Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi. Ylang-Ylang and Tuberose. It creates a creamy, skin-like aura.
- The Gold Standard: Gilded Rose. Inspired by Woman in Gold. Rose molecules lifted by Aldehydes and Vanilla. It radiates a "golden" frequency.
If the Vices become too much, we recommend White Polo (inspired by Lacoste Blanc).
It is chemically simple: Grapefruit, Rosemary, and Tuberose. It smells like a clean white shirt. It is the virtue to balance your vices.
